“la Caixa” Banking Foundation (FBLC) is a Spanish private foundation whose mission is to contribute to the advance of society. FBLC ranks among the top 10 world foundations considering either endowment or annual budget.
In 2018, FBLC has begun a gradual expansion of its programmes to Portugal as a result of the entry of the BPI bank in the Caixabank Group. Within the framework of this expansion, our next step is the opening of our prestigious fellowship framework programme to Portugal.
The investment in science and research is part of the corporate strategy of our entity. For this reason, following the line of action of our strategic plan, a new fellowships programme has been launched in 2017 aimed at postdoctoral researchers. The first pilot call has been a great success, incorporating 30 excellent postdoctoral researchers with leadership skills to promote their own research group to Spanish research centres and
That is the reason why in 2018, from FBLC we want to extend this programme so that excellent Portuguese research centres and labs, as your entity, can opt to incorporate postdoctoral researchers with our support.
The programme, JUNIOR LEADER “la Caixa”, is aimed at hiring excellent researchers, of any nationality, who wish to continue their research career in Spanish and Portuguese territory in STEM disciplines: life sciences and health, experimental sciences, physical and mathematics. They must be exceptional candidates in terms of
originality and the importance of their contributions in their scientific discipline as well as possess leadership skills.
This programme is articulated in two independent subprograms directed to all those people who have finished the doctorate between two and seven years before the deadline of the call with the following characteristics:
• 22 postdoctoral fellowships to researchers to carry out their research in accredited centres with the Spanish Seal of Excellence Severo Ochoa, María de Maeztu or IISCIII and Portuguese units accredited as “excellent” or “exceptional” according to the evaluation of the Fundação de Ciência e Tecnologia.
For Spanish institutions, candidates must have resided in Spain for less than 12 months in the last three years while for Portuguese institutions, candidates must have resided in Portugal for less than 12 months in the last three years.
This subprogramme, which has an innovative design and highly competitive funding, will be presented as a proposal to the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programme ‐ Marie Skłodowska‐Curie Actions ‐ COFUND for co‐financing.
• 11 postdoctoral fellowships to carry out a research project in any university or research center in Spain or Portugal of researchers who have resided or carried out their main activity in the same country, either Spain, or Portugal, more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
Both subprogrammes have a maximum allocation of € 305,100 per fellowship with the following breakdown:
• Salary cost of € 59,000 that includes the researcher’s gross salary and employer costs.
• Provision of € 38,500 per year for research project costs.
• Family support of € 1,200 gross per year for each child.
• € 5,400 gross in a single payment at the start of the contract for travel and transfer expenses.
To complement the economic endowment, “la Caixa” Banking Foundation offers researchers, among other benefits, a professional development programme in transversal competences with special emphasis on leadership, knowledge transfer, responsible innovation and research, as well as access to the network of fellows of “la Caixa” and other benefits that place these fellowships among the most attractive and
comprehensive in Europe.
“la Caixa” Banking Foundation directly launches each call and is in charge of the management of the selection process . On the other hand, once the fellowships have been granted, the candidates propose the centre and research group they would like to join and with which previously they have had contact to attach a letter of intent from the institution to their candidacy and work on a research proposal agreed with the centre.
The fellowships of the next call will be granted in 2019 by launching the call in July 2018. During this period, we will be working in parallel on the proposal for obtaining European funding.
If you are interested in the project, I would be grateful if you would send us the letter of support for this application to the Marie Skłodowska‐Curie Actions ‐ COFUND programme, following the example we provide attached HERE: HostCentres_Junior Leader Fellowships_Portugal
These fellowships are an opportunity to promote independent research plans and help maintain, if not increase, the magnificent level of scientific excellence that your institution already enjoys.
